A set of instruments was sought for FibroFix™, a novel cartilage repair device.  The instruments were required to prepare a pocket in damaged articular cartilage within the knee, tailored to a range of implant sizes and shapes.

Key requirements: 

• precise control of the pocket profile and depth to ensure favourable device and peripheral loading, and successful subsequent integration;

• care to avoid damage/disturbance to surrounding tissue;

• ease of use was an important consideration throughout.

Our work involved the development of a proposed surgical workflow and instrument concepts, through to design of the definitive set of instruments for the clinical trial of the FibroFix™ device.
 

The iterative development process involved successive prototype stages and cadaveric evaluations, and included both re-useable and single-use instruments.
